Fort Hood

  1. I guess prayer doesn't work. I was praying this wasn't jihadi-related. US Armed Forces need ppl with Middle Eastern language abilities. Not good. Was I praying for the wrong thing, God?

  2. I think Hasan was born in the USA. He may not have had any linguistic contributions to offer the services. Maybe the Army didn't need Hasan as much as Hasan needed to get out.

  3. Vigil:

    1. A lame, pathetic, effeminate statement by Obama.
    2. MSNBC can't spell "tragedy"? I bet Fox can.
    3. Tasteful Masthead. Good.

Always like to end on an upbeat note.

  4. This will fuel the fires of Middle East hatred. The murdering scumbag had "one of those" names. good tribute Vigil.

  5. Hasan was born in the US, and grew up as a Muslim. My gut feeling is that a mental health provider coming apart at the seems is an indication of just how worn out our military has become after eight years of misuse.

  6. This is a delicate one. The shooter in Florida incident WASN'T Muslim. And, no, nobody is bringing up HIS religion. On the other hand, the fact that the Fort Hood shooter WAS Muslim, while we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions based upon that, we do have to look into possible radical views and connections. And I guess that that's what they're doing with his computer, etc.. There, I can exhale now.

  7. From what I'm hearing, his religion may have been a factor. I think we need more info on what actually motivated him.

  8. Death to all Muslims! That will one day be the rallying cry for the crazy Righties, but not until Obama is no longer president. As long as they have him their death rays will be focused right at him....

  9. A lot of American-Muslim groups have stepped up and condemned this action. Hopefully, that's a story that gets some ink, too.

  10. Madmike is right about the possible rightwing Khristian America rallying cry. Just let another 9/11 happen and it will be the Crusades all over again.

  11. A thoughtful post of a thoughtful man at a sensitive point in time which I commend you on, Vig. I get anti-Muslim email from various ignorant wingnuts I know quite frequently, and their ignorance is astounding. I fully expect to see a big new batch of this crap come my way fairly soon now.

It is interesting to see such fragmented coverage on the shooter. Oh, of course we got the news that he was Muslim and of Jordanian descent. But I have heard only a couple of very brief blurbs mentioning ant-Muslim hate he was exposed to recently, like when his car was keyed and an "Allah is love" bumper sticker was ripped off of his bumper right after he moved to his new apartment close to the base. That certainly doesn't excuse his murderous actions, but when coupled with his anxiety over his upcoming deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, it does provide us with a little understanding of the mental stress he was under. Could it be that self-righteous ignorant wingnut over-patriotism and hatred of Muslims was the straw that broke the camel's back and caused this Major Hasan to go over the edge here? Only time will tell, but, if so, great job, wingnuts! What will you pull next?

  12. As it turns out Hasan was a terrorist piece of shit. He killed those troopers on behalf of Allah.

  13. He sure was, Mike. And it appears that the military may have known about it, too. Somebody definitely has some 'splainin' to do (the fact that he was in contact with Al Qaeda, etc.).

  14. It has now become apparent that Hasan did indeed have Al Qaeda sympathies. His actions were inexcusable. But we must not make the mistake of profiling all Muslims as Al Qaeda sympathizers, just as not all German-Americans were pro-Kaiser Wilhelm in WWI or all Japanese-Americans were pro-Tojo in WWII...

  15. So where is Vigil? He is MIA, and has been for several days. I hope all is OK...

  16. Thanks for your concern, Mike. I've been out of town to accompany Trophy Wife in a little bit of surgery; going forward, I'll be out of circulation, somewhat, to wait upon her slightest desires.

  17. I've backed off on this topic in general Vig. I don't think Hasan is a 'extreme radical or terrorist'... I think he is disturbed, perhaps psychotic, a murderer and should have been observed by the military hierarchy. The scarmongering over this has been deplorable. He may have contacted an Imam tied to AlQaeda, still, he was not executing a terror plot. He lost his mind in fear of facing whatever lay ahead of him in deployment. I kind of ditto Jack, here. :-)
