Justice Sonia Sotomayor!

A Slam-Dunk for SCOTUS!

President Obama elevates Federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court!

More fluent in Spanish than in English, Sotomayor started school at Blessed Sacrament in Soundview. Then she moved on to Cardinal Spellman in Wakefield. In 1972, she made a huge leap to Princeton University, an Ivy League school that had started accepting women undergraduates only in 1969.

She aced the place, graduating summa cum laude and going on to Yale Law School, where she was an editor of a law journal. She moved on from there to work as a trial lawyer in the Manhattan district attorney's office, as an attorney in private practice and then as a federal judge.

The first President Bush, a Republican, appointed to Sotomayor to Manhattan Federal Court in 1992. President Clinton, a Democrat, elevated her to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998.

  1. I'm watching Sotomayer right now on C-SPAN. In this moot court, she comes across as a sharp questioner! I'd say, she's an excellent choice!

  2. I think she will be an outstanding pick, certainly more qualified than caveman Clarence Thomas to sit on our highest court. And it's high time we had a person of commoner upbringing on the Supreme Court. As my ongoing "Time for REAL Representation" blog series clearly shows, common people are all but shut out of every other branch of government!

  3. I drove home listening to a unidentified senator explain how he was going to evaluate Sotomayor. He was talking like he had spent the last three decades in the manor or castle. It was most inane thing I have heard in a long time. And then he said he had voted against Sotomayor in her previous appointment and would have to re-read his speeches on that manner. I sat in my car after I got home, wondering who this creepy fucking asshole was. He was identified as Senator Grassley from Iowa.

  4. I couldn't agree more with Jack Jodell. This is a great pick. Once again, The Prez has outmaneuvered the GOP on the political by selecting not only a woman but a Latina for the court. It puts the GOP in a bind. If they don't protest, they will appear let the right-wing GOP base down. If they protest too much, they will appear as Cheney-like villains in going against the first Latina nominee. Remember: the Republican Party is trying to re-brand itself as a fiscal conservative but nonetheless diverst party, a welcoming party, a party with an open tent. Ugh huh. But how is that going to square with racist talk to keep out a Latino, a lady who represents the fastest growing people in the United States. The queen is trapped.

Chalk up another one for The Prez.

  6. People at both extremes seem to have issues with her. That means to me that she's probably an excellent choice.
