Specter = Lieberman

News to no one:

Arlen Specter is not guided by any enduring principles.

In 2001, when Senator Jim Jeffords from Vermont left the Republican Party, Arlen Specter rose from the floor of the Senate to propose a Senate rules change to prevent this from happening again in the future. A Senator's "organizational" vote, Specter said, belongs not to him but to the party which elected him.

12 minutes:

Specter is garbage, and should be accepted as such.

Last night the Dodgers won 1-0 because Russell Martin held up on ball four with the bases loaded: an excellent outcome to a beautiful game.

In politics, beauty is illusory. Only results count. Democrats already have garbage - Lieberman - in their party. One more bag won't hurt them.

  1. Specter is not a gift to the Democrats but a trojan horse. His migration to the Democrats means that Obama cannot rely on his vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on a nomination of Souter's replacement on the SCOTUS.

The rule, first reported by Politico, requires the vote of at least one minority member in order to break the equivalent of a committee filibuster. Here's the full text of the rule:

    V. BRINGING A MATTER TO A VOTE The Chairman shall entertain a non-debatable motion to bring a matter before the Committee to a vote. If there is objection to bring the matter to a vote without further debate, a roll call vote of the Committee shall be taken, and debate shall be terminated if the motion to bring the matter to a vote without further debate passes with ten votes in the affirmative, one of which must be cast by the minority. With Specter's decampment to the Democratic side of the aisle, the possibility of his casting a minority vote becomes null and void, helping Republicans thwart Obama's picks from even making it to the Senate floor.

  2. No matter what party it benefits I don't think it should be permitted for an elected official to switch parties until election time.

Specter is just another example of someone covering their ass and wanting to keep a very cushy job.

  3. I agree completely and said so over at my place. Specter is just another prostitute.

  4. Specter says Norm Coleman Should Be Seated so that there is at least one Jewish Republican in the Senate.

  5. Oh wait! Wait! Specter now says he spoke (1) hastily, (2) out of context (3) mispoke and/or (4) misinterpreted!

    He now says he

"conclusively misspoke ...In the swirl of moving from one caucus to another, I have to get used to my new teammates ... I’m ordinarily pretty correct in what I say. I’ve made a career of being precise. I conclusively misspoke...."

  6. The difference between Specter and Lieberman
is the difference between a US soldier who is publicly opposed to war in Iraq and a US soldier who actually joins the insurgents to kill American soldiers

  7. With the notable exception of President Obama himself, Spektor has been greeted with universal disdain from Dems.

His long and puzzling career is over.
