In this case, I was conscious of my not 'reading more' about Obama's statement on Friday, confident it would be reversed on Monday. I underestimated him again!
What did you expect? He is a politician just like all the rest of them. He has the same puppet masters and the ones before him. Gibbs as much discarded the "professional left". There is no dissent from the left allowed in this White House. Hopefully he has proven one thing to the wanna be dems. That there is no real difference between the two sides of the aisle. Power and control are their only goal. We are their ant farm.
Then he went on to say he would not comment on the wisdom of putting one there. That is all he should have thought about. It will be a wicked drawing card for future terrorism recruits. Major mistake!
How wonderfully reflected Vig. I agree. I no longer support the President, there are so few that I agree fully on with him any longer. It's a hang your head down kind of disappointment.
For one brief shining moment Friday night we all secretly hoped Barack Obama had magically turned into President Andrew Shepherd, the fictional hero from Rob Reiner's "The American President."
Alas, on Saturday morning we learned that only Aaron Sorkin can write such stirring words and only Michael Douglas can deliver them with the passion that makes our hearts swell.
He did it with HCR/financial reform/stimulus. The POTUS stirs his base up to get their support, then allows whatever bit of policy which follows to be undermined before ultimately delivering something which appeals to no one.
Outside of the fact that any President is in a terribly difficult position when it comes to discussing religion in this country gone gaga on the subject, what else can he possibly say except what he said in this land "founded on freedom" for everyone except its original inhabitants? He spoke as President rather than as an individual citizen. As an atheist, I say give him a break!
As one of my commenters said today, to even things out, let's tear all the churches down anywhere near the Murrah building, since Tim McVeigh was joined at the hip with those "Christian Identity" people.
Will..... please. Pursue your agenda a bit less nakedly. Weiner might not always be what you want him to be (and how could he, right?) but he's not a coward.
Vigilante, I share your frustration. The guy has simply not measured up to quite what we expected or were hoping for. I am not recommending complacency, and I urge all of us on the left to keep pressing Obama and the Democrats to stand with the people and push for progress. But I fear if we abandon Obama altogether we may end up with something far worse than we had from 2001-2007. For the Republicans are even more outlandish and conservative now than they were back then, and we cannot allow them to regain total control.
Oh Gees. I am so BURNED OUT on progressive complaints. I grew up in a conservative, racist, abuse-centered environment, and I see a lot of those people empowered by the fear of Glenn Beck, et al. and the Republican rich are HAPPY that the left is UNHAPPY with Obama. They want us all to work for nothing and make them richer. AND NOT VOTE.
Please people, vote for progressives and left minded people. This is a philosophical war.
Ditto, ditto, ditto, Urban Pink. If the right gets in control again, it will be because of the pissers and moaners on the left. I'd add that they deserve it but we'll all hurt.
Pinks, there is not one scintilla of impulse within my body and soul not to vote against Republicans every freaking opportunity I have for the rest of my life (& beyond). And I maintain that a vote for any 3rd party is a vote for the GOP.
Tennessee, I'm not dittoing what you said because I feel I can plead the Progressive cause better if I concede that Barack Obama is a flaming moderate.
I know he's a moderate. I too wish he were much more progressive. I have my disappointments as well. Finally, I have no problem with constructive criticism. I just feel we're giving those nuts on the right a weapon and that they're enjoying seeing what they perceive to be the disintegration of the Democratic party. Of course, they're wrong - as usual - but I personally don't want to provide fuel for their fire.
Urban and tn, I always vote for progressive people. I am roundly condemned by Democrats for doing so.
I don't think fighting for progressive policy is pissing and moaning, I don't think wanting a better world is pissing and moaning. Leslie I know you don't come from $, maybe Urban Pink does. Many of us wanted health insurance, Urban Pink. Many of us thought financial reform was needed.A lot of us oppose war.
I am disappointed middle of the road, Wall St, DLC Democrats like you guys have so much contempt for us complaining, pissing and moaning whiners who would like to see a better world rather than a crony capitalist banana Republic.
Oso, on this point, when LBJ ran amuck on diverting the people's business to Vietnam, Robert Kennedy rose to the take up the torch. (In that instance, the Progressive cause was robbed by an assassin's bullet.) If BHO continues to run amuck, who shall pick up the torch for this generation?
Oso. Your way or the highway? I'm with Vigilante on a progressive picking up the torch, but that is right, who? I am IN LOVE with Jerry Brown and he's considered the leftist leftist. Obama is a little boring and moderate, but I can't criticize him for doing exactly what he said he would!!! Did you ever support his hawkish agenda? He always had it. Many Democrats are working for a progressive agenda, and I support their voices all the time. Gibbs isn't my kind of Democrat either. So you won't vote?
Vig, I was so pissed off about the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, etc. that I damn near voted for Barr in '08. But, like you said, a vote for Barr would have clearly been a vote for Mr. McCain. I'm telling you, though, if Mr. Bloomberg decides to give it a shot in '12, and he's polling in the 30s, I would vote for him in a heartbeat. He's the only politician (as far as I can tell) who's still standing upright over this whole frigging mosque controversy. That alone tells me a lot.
Oh, and as far as Obama "backing" away from his first statement, he didn't say anything good or bad about the decision of the Imam to build there. Having lived in NY and known people who got skyscraper dust in their homes in that neighborhood, I don't know what I think of that decision either!!
The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naive and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who loves his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.
Reverend G R Gleig, survived the First Anglo-Afghan War to write in 1843:
...a war begun for no wise purpose, carried on with a strange mixture of rashness and timidity, brought to a close after suffering and disaster, without much glory attached either to the government which directed, or the great body of troops which waged it. Not one benefit, political or military, has Britain acquired with this war. Our eventual evacuation of the country resembled the retreat of an army defeated.
