Thanks for showcasing Elizabeth Warren's excellent comment. Here is what, Benjamin Franklin stated in 1783.
"The remissness of our people in paying taxes is highly blameable, the unwillingness to pay them is still more so. I see in some resolutions of town-meetings, a remonstrance against giving Congress a power to take as they call it, the "people's money". ... All the property that is necessary to a man for the conservation of the individual and the propagation of the species, is his natural right which none can justly deprive him of. But all property of the public, who by their laws have created it, and who may therefore by other laws dispose of it, whenever the welfare of the public shall demand such disposition. He that does not like civil society on these terms, let him retire and live among savages. He can have no right to the benefits of society who will not pay his club toward the support of it." (emphasis added by Emily)
Webster's Third New International Dictionary defines the word "club" (obs) as: (1) a social meeting or gathering (as at a tavern) at which expenses are shared (2) a sharing of a charge or expense (as for a meal or entertainment) by those partaking; also as: one individual's share in such a joint expense., (And additionally): an association of persons participating in a plan by which they agree to make regular payments ...in order to secure some advantage. and : to unite or combine for a common cause or goal.
The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naive and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who loves his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.
Reverend G R Gleig, survived the First Anglo-Afghan War to write in 1843:
...a war begun for no wise purpose, carried on with a strange mixture of rashness and timidity, brought to a close after suffering and disaster, without much glory attached either to the government which directed, or the great body of troops which waged it. Not one benefit, political or military, has Britain acquired with this war. Our eventual evacuation of the country resembled the retreat of an army defeated.
