A New Low for Seditionists in America

I am assuming I am speaking of Americans. But, who's to say?

Apparently a Facebook group has put up a page, praying for Barack Obama's demise:

Dear Lord, This year you took my favorite actor, Patrick Swayzie. You took my favorite actress, Farah Fawcett. You took my favorite singer, Michael Jackson. I just wanted to let you know, my favorite president is Barack Obama. Amen
This Facebook group has passed 1,000,000 members. That's what they say. I say their presence on Facebook violates rules:
.....You will not post content that: is hateful....

..... You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious ....
Happily, another group has posted a Facebook account which petitions To Clean Up Facebook, starting with the removal of the seditionists. I have signed their petition (with real name). No more Facebook for me. Either the scum goes or I go.

  1. I noticed a long time ago that the sidebar ads are predominantly right wing bullshit. I've also heard (but have no personal way of knowing for sure) that they're pretty quick to get rid of liberal groups if someone whines.

  2. Jokes are funny. This is not. Folks who laugh at this sort of thing or worse, who have posted some of the ugliest, nastiest, and most threatening things on the “prayer” page—they validate one another. They pat each other on the rear like fellow ball players. This makes the Timothy McVeighs among them feel that their violent acts speak for the whole group.

If even one member of the “prayer” group feels, “Hey, if I kill the President, I’m answering a million+ prayers and I’m a hero,” then we have a tragedy that every single person who ‘liked’ that joke helped to create.

As someone said of Nazi Germany,

“First it was okay to joke about the Jews, then to spit on Jews, then to throw bricks at Jews, then it was okay to kill Jews.”

As a people, we cannot step onto that slope.

  3. You know folks I signed up for Facebook six months ago and rarely use it except to post a blogpost.
Thanks for making me aware of what's going on with that site.

  4. I also was unaware that the right Repuglickers were so dominant on Facebook, I'll check it out too.

  5. Thanks a bunch for posting this. I am going to link it to my own FB page as well as check it out further via the links you provide.

JR: I've been thinking the same damn thing. In fact I've wondered if there's a way to tell FB you don't want these ads on your site.

Bigmac: I signed up a little over a year ago. Basically I have considered it a Social Wasteland but at least I could keep up with my kids. Now, that I have a lot of fellow bloggers on there, I'm enjoying it and post things I don't always put up on my blog.

  10. While I choose not to do anything with FB, I have sent this to friends that do have FB pages and told them all they know what to do. If they know what is good for them :) they will do as I command them.

  11. @Vig, Jess,
This business with Facebook ads and group recommendations also exposes the absolute idiocy of machines:
If you're Liberal, or vote for the Democratic Party, or just don't very much like what the Republicans have been up to for the last 20 years, you're probably going to make comments and join groups in line with that sort of thinking, i.e. joining groups like "Dick Armey Really Is a Dick" fan page etc.
Problem is, the ad network's "spiders" which scan all character-based (text) activity on the social network just pick up the name "Dick Armey" and if you've consistently complained about him, it just scores the number of your mentions and will start serving you ads realted to his efforts.
Thankfully, they've also develpoed software to allow you to state the ad is irrelevant to you and why (check the lower right of the ads).
So it's not necessarily a Right wing affinity; if it's any consolation (It certainly gives me a big chuckle) Republicans on Facebook complain of the same problem, many FBers who are also birthers for example got spammed with ads for Obama fan pages, Healthcare now! fan page solicitations and the like for the Obama Administration.
As for the number of Tea baggers and other far right loonies on social networks... hell, there's just too many of them everywhere, right?

  12. Jolly.. I noticed at the team blog, there is too much right wing bullshit ads, also! It gets under your pallet. It stuns me IP, that folks are this ignorant and plain old mean, nasty. And they revel in their fears... passing them along as much as they may. FB is a big...HUGE cyber place. I have hundreds of friends... yet they are all like minded folks, to me, that is. I don't see so much nasty as I read about it on blogs or in the news... as fine a place for networking that I have experienced at FB... I guess the opposition camp does too. Hate should not be allowed. Exploiting the weak minded by the most cruel. Praying for death... my dear departed mither used to warn me not to ever wait on dead man's shoes...

I'll be reposting to FB too. Good post IP. Ta.

  13. Just for the record, I don't have a single conservative friend or associate who in any way wishes harm upon the President. Barney Frank, now that fellow's a different .... I'm kidding!
